Although the drought isn’t over we have planted a small crop! Here’s John and Lynne weeding. Talking about weeding is something I seem to do rather a lot of because garlic is a ‘loner’ type of plant. It enjoys its own company and loathes getting crowded out. Commercial garlic growers spray the whole crop regularly with a herbicide to kill off weeds. This means the garlic is sprayed too! For us using an organic system, we use a tool behind the tractor while the garlic crop is small or hand weed. I’ve never heard of an organic garlic grower with a garlic crop that never ever had to do some weeding during the course of the crop’s life, no matter how thoroughly they mulched. So far during the lock down it’s only been John, Lynne and myself that been down there weeding……..I like to think it’s a good time to think.
